Saudi Arabia

With an area of 2.15 million km², Saudi Arabia is one of the largest countries in the region in terms of size. Around 28.5 million people live in the desert state and inhabit especially the region in the centre of the Arabian Peninsula from Dammam to Riyadh to Mecca and Medina. The average age is 28, with a share of over 26 % in children between the age of 0 and 14.

Largest economy in the Arabian region

As one of the world’s largest oil producers, Saudi Arabia has the strongest economy in the Near and Middle East. Its gross domestic product in 2017 totalled around US$ 683.8 billion. The government invests significantly in education, schooling and healthcare but also promotes the private sector. The low unemployment rate of around 5 % is also due to the high share of foreign labour in the economy.

Growing income boosts consumerism

Governmental measures have led to an increase in wages over the past years. In addition to this trend, building attractive shopping malls and modern consumer markets contributes to growing consumer expenditure. Shopping has become a popular way to spend one’s free time. Saudi Arabians enjoy buying international products, which makes the country interesting for the international toy industry. For the years to come, experts anticipate double-digit growth rates for the toy and infant sector.

Educational toys are trending

Achievement is a concept that is deeply anchored amongst Saudi parents. Educational toys and games that promote the intelligence and creativity of children are therefore especially popular. Toy safety is of crucial importance. Not only the high demands of parents but also state regulations play a vital role here. Especially electronic devices and toys must meet the existing product standards to receive permission to enter the Saudi-Arabian market.
